Role description

The Purpose:
To be instrumental in designing and delivering systems aimed at developing the Manchester United Academy Youth Development Phase (12-16) players. To provide an athletic foundation for durability, resistance to injury and a level of physicality that will enable them to execute the technical and tactical skills required to support an effective transition to the professional development phase of academy football.

The Role:
To oversee the development of systematic training programmes for both teams and individual academy players. These will be delivered in close collaboration with coaches.
To create and implement nutrition and sports science strategies in collaboration with colleagues to optimise availability and preparedness throughout the season.
To deliver on aspects of rehabilitation, pre-habilitation, and recovery modalities in line with the club’s best practice and bespoke to the individual and group needs.
To implement the Manchester United assessment programme and ensure that it is age-specific, comprehensive and helps drive the Individual Development Plans of players through the Development Model.
To support the development of all aspects of age/ability-specific strength and conditioning practices and programmes including setting performance standards, testing, and monitoring for all players in the YDP phase, ensuring appropriate specificity to age, maturity and playing position.
To support in the collecting, capturing, analyses and interpretation of data to inform programme prescription in line with the Lead YDP Phase Coach’s principles of play and tactical vision.
To maintain a comprehensive, indexed database of work conducted with all players, including the management and monitoring of player stress and internal/external training load markers where deemed appropriate at specific age groups.
To develop a Coaching relationship that is conducive to developing players to play professional football at the highest levels.
To undertake duties & tasks as directed by the Academy Performance Support Manager and Head of Physical Performance.
To work closely with the key stakeholders in coordinating S&C, football science, and other input providers to achieve high levels of player physical wellbeing and development.

The Person:
Holder of a BSc/BA in Sports Science and MSc/MRes/MPhil in Sports Science (or other relevant discipline) from a recognised university, specialising in physical preparation of young and youth players.
UKSCA Accredited Strength & Conditioning Coach (or international equivalent or BASES High Performance) or FA Fitness Trainers Award (or international equivalent).
Basic First Aid for Sport (BFAS) or equivalent/higher qualification.
Minimum of 4 years working with elite sport / professional football academies, with experience at youth age groups.
Experience in leading the provision of strength and conditioning services, including coaching players and coaches to improve the learning and development experience, demonstrating and understanding the unique challenges during adolescence.
Experience of working within a multi-disciplinary performance team in the delivery of all facets of physical development and sports science to elite academy players.
Excellent communication skills with the ability to build meaningful, strong strategic relationships with Club staff and young players.
Experience of and enthusiasm for coaching and mentoring elite young people.
The ability to demonstrate good session planning and strong organisational skills.
An understanding and empathy with education and learning with a strong commitment to personal development and training.
Awareness of diversity and equality challenges in football.
Willingness to work weekends and the ability to travel independently.
A knowledge of and ability to teach appropriate weightlifting and Olympic weightlifting techniques.
The ability to communicate complex data in terms that are easily understood by a wide range of audiences.
Excellent I.T. skills with experience of physical measurement and athlete analysis systems.
To be able to work within the rules of the UK Professional Code of Conduct, standards and guidelines and, where appropriate, Manchester United F.C. the host agency.
To be able to demonstrate the desire to engage with and support continuous professional development in areas that promote the development of a best-in-class learning and development environment.
To be able to contribute to knowledge development, aggregation and sharing across the department to support the development of best-in-class strength and conditioning services.
