Overview
Columbus Crew is searching for a passionate individual for a Sports Science and Data Intern to support the High Performance Staff with focus on data analysis and other projects. This position will allow this person to interact with several departments at the Columbus Crew, second team or academy players, and gain experience working in professional sports environment and data analytics. The position is predominantly based at the Ohio Health Performance Center in Columbus, OH, and requires occasional travel (domestic and international). Ideal applicants will be able to attend all team functions (training sessions & matches) and work from our office(s) during the day, in addition to traveling with Academy teams to away events. This will amount to approximately 20-25 hours per week. Opportunities for advancement within the Crew staff are possible for exceptional candidates.
Responsibilities:
Assist in managing the collection and analysis of Crew performance data sets, including but not limited to video screen, readiness to train, wellness, training, fatigue monitoring, and match data.
Participate actively within the High Performance Department in maximizing the daily performance of players.
Manage the integration of current analytical tools into a central data management system
Experiment with our datasets to find new relationships between physical data and performance on field.
Perform regular correlative data studies looking for performance trends
Explore and create new dashboards and reports to analyze physical health of the players throughout the course of the season.
Any other duties and projects deemed necessary in your role.
Reports directly to the First Team Data Analyst
Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science, Data Analytics, or related fields, required.
Master’s Degree, or working towards, preferred.
Passion for Sport and Data Analytics
Demonstrated experience in collecting and analyzing large data sets
High level of competency with Excel and Tableau
Proficient in a statistical programming language, preferably Python.
Experience with GPS systems preferred (Statsports Apex, etc)
Strong work-ethic and proactive attitude
Ability to work on independent assignments; to collaborate with a team; multi-task and problem solve in a fast-paced work environment
Flexible evening and weekend schedule; ability to work from the Ohio Health Performance Center during the week and travel around Central Ohio on weekends. Opportunities will also arise for out-of-state travel.
