Role description

Background:
The purpose of this role is to manage all aspects of the football side of the business and have overall responsibility for the 1st team, Academy, recruitment, scouting, performance analysis, performance preparation (sports science and medical) and football operations. The individual will be responsible for the coordination of key stakeholders to achieve the strategic goals. He or she will create and implement a progressive strategic plan which contains key performance measures for all football activity. This role will provide the link between the Heads of each of the football department functions, the CEO & the Chairman. The football strategy will form part of the club’s overall business plan with the objective of creating a modern high performance football infrastructure in a club that is successful in the USL and on the world stage. The position is responsible for creating competitive advantages that will be demonstrated by the club outperforming its competitors on the pitch and commercially off the pitch. While strategic planning and implementation is a key component, this role is fully responsible for managing the nuts and bolts of all aspects of football operations.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
Strategy
Drive all areas of the football department 
Create, implement and review football strategy 
Build Clear KPI’s for each football function with input from all football department Heads, as well as the CEO 
Benchmark performance against other industry leaders 
Report to Chairman & CEO on football department performance against KPI’s and strategic objectives 
Create a clear football philosophy, culture and a Hartford Athletic way that matches the club’s strategic values and business plan

1st Team Responsibilities 
1st team Manager reports to the Sporting Director (this will be implemented upon signing of next Manager) 
Maintain an ongoing succession plan for future 1st team Manager recruitment – evaluating against set criteria 
Make recommendations to the Chairman on the appointment of future Managers 
Ensure that 1st team staff are fully functional and support the club and the 1st team manager
In conjunction with the 1st team manager, CEO & Chairman, hire and manage the 1st team staff Create an environment which allows the 1st team staff to maximize their impact on the club 
Ensure that the 1st team management are implementing the clubs football philosophy, culture and the Hartford Athletic way 
Ensure clear communication, actionable reporting and positive relationships between 1st team management, 1st team manager, CEO and Chairman 
Create effective communication channels across the various football departments to ensure that the 1st team is receiving best in- class support from the Academy, Performance Prep team, operations and analysis and other football departments 
Work with the 1st team management to ensure the delivery of the ‘non-negotiables’ agreed by the CEO and Chairman and made clear to the first team management during the recruitment process 
Evaluate the progress of the 1st team against agreed upon KPI’s 
Support the 1st team management as required to maximize their performance

Scouting & Recruitment 
Line management responsibility for Head of Scouting & Recruitment/Chief Scout 
Create and maintain a club owned database system containing player data, as well as historical successes and failures of the recruitment process 
Create player characteristics profiles based on the 1st team coach’s input 
Create a player succession planning model taking into account existing player contract dates, key targets, market value and academy prospects 
Utilize available technologies, including third party databases to ensure Hartford Athletic is at the forefront of the recruitment market 
Make clear recruitment recommendations, to the Chairman supported by data 
Maintain active relationships with agents to create a best in class pipeline of player talent 
Negotiate the purchase and sales of players within pre-agreed budget limits set by the CEO & Chairman 
Deliver a successful player trading model which adds value, generates significant returns on investment and maintains a successful Hartford Athletic team on the pitch
Academy 
Line management responsibility for Head of Academy 
Ensure that Academy is contributing to the wider football strategy 
Ensure that the Academy is implementing the clubs football philosophy, culture and the Hartford Athletic way 
Evaluate the progress of the Academy against agreed upon KPI’s 
Work with the Academy to ensure the recruitment of the best available talent and the creation of a clear pathway for such talent 
Work with Head of Academy to create a best in class Academy which is one of the top Academies in USA
Performance Preparation (PP) 
Line management responsibility for the Head of PP 
Ensure that PP team is fully aware and contributing to the wider football strategy 
Ensure that the PP team is implementing the club's football philosophy, culture and the Hartford Athletic way 
Evaluate the progress of the PP team against agreed KPI’s
Support research and development in this area to create a function renowned for its innovation that is measured by player performance, development and ultimately player market value 
Ensure the PP team is providing a best in class service to the 1st team and Academy

Operations 
Line management responsibility for the Head of Operations 
Ensure that Operations team contributes to the wider football strategy 
Ensure that the Operations team is implementing the clubs football philosophy, culture and the Hartford Athletic way 
Evaluate the progress of the Operations team against agreed upon KPI’s 
Ensure that all staff have clear development plans and that we are investing in the education and the development of our people
Create a department that removes obstacles and road blocks to achieve high performance across all of the football department functions and most importantly in the performance levels of the players and coaches
Operations 
Line management responsibility for the Head of Operations
Ensure that Operations team contributes to the wider football strategy 
Ensure that the Operations team is implementing the clubs football philosophy, culture and the Hartford Athletic way 
Evaluate the progress of the Operations team against agreed upon KPI’s 
Ensure that all staff have clear development plans and that we are investing in the education and the development of our people 
Create a department that removes obstacles and road blocks to achieve high performance across all of the football department functions and most importantly in the performance levels of the players and coaches

Qualifications 
College Degree 
Experience managing multiple functions in a large organization 
10-Years’ experience in a soccer environment 
Deep understanding of the US and International soccer markets; including FIFA rules around player transfers
