The FA oversees England international teams acrossmen's, women's, youth and disability football, as well as running the National League System and FA Competitions including the Emirates FA Cup, Barclays FA Women's Super League, FAWomen's Championship, and Vitality Women's FA Cup, and the world-class facilities of Wembley Stadium and St. George's Park,all with a purpose to Unite the Game and Inspire the Nation.

The Role

A new, exciting opportunity has opened to join our FA medical team in providing support to our England Football Teams. We are looking to recruit a full timeProfessional Development Phase Lead Physiotherapistto join our team.
The successful candidate will oversee all physiotherapy consultants delivering to the U18, U19 U20 England teams, and will be team physio to one of these teams also. Being a critical member of a multidisciplinary support team will require you to work closely with coaches, physical performance coaches, team doctor and team operations managers both on and off camp to deliver an exceptional performance medicine. provision.
Maximise the prospects of success and to prepare players for potential senior call-up, the FA have developed ways of working that give consistency of practice throughout the development pathway. This includes ongoing development of a curriculum to ensure our physiotherapists can deliver to a consistently high standard within a framework. In addition to the team role, there is an expectation that the successful individual will contribute to the delivery and development of this curriculum.

Liaise closely with the Youth Development Phase (YDP) Physiotherapist, YDP Physical Performance Coach and the Pathway Lead Doctor to ensure an aligned delivery of the PPMN curriculum.
Deliver on camp physiotherapy services for one of the PDP teams and support delivery in the YDP also when required.(80-100 days approx.)
Work closely with the PDP Lead Coach to ensure physiotherapy delivery is aligned with their coaching strategy.
Offer regular support to the coaching and operations team of the team you work with. Ensure off camp support for medical updates and camp planning.
Support the PPMN department in its ongoing development of ‘on camp delivery' and the curriculum.
Ensure comprehensive review process for all PDP post camp and end of season to ensure ongoing continuous development.
Support the department in Senior Men's projects aimed at helping us achieve our over riding goal of winning a major tournament by 2024

Key Accountabilities


Delivery of outstanding performance medicine to one of the teams in the PDP (and teams in YDP when required). This encompasses all aspects of injury assessment, management rehabilitation, Injury prevention and load management.
To closely liaise with the MDT and the coaching staff of that team to ensure optimal management of player's health and fitness throughout the camp.
Delivery of FA Performance Medicine curriculum on camp. Focus blocks include wellness and exposure, injury management, mandated screening and education, player intel info and health and wellbeing.
Support the physical performance team in their delivery of team preparation, recovery, travel, nutrition, and load management for international football.
Attend all training sessions and matches, along with regular medical and multidisciplinary meetings throughout any camp.
To be responsible for maintaining the integrity of the medical and rehabilitation kit.
Maintain and update medical records as required and in line with CSP recommendations on note keeping in ‘Good Medical Practice'. Ensure medical notes are entered on to the PMA and kept up to date by all staff.
Liaise with club medical staff post camp to ensure a comprehensive medical handover post camp. To include medical notes, wellness and exposure data and GPS. Follow up in person with any injuries or issues that have occurred on camp.


Provide weekly player status updates following club fixtures for the team you work with. Follow up with clubs if player is unavailable / injured. Meet weekly with coaches and PPMN MDT to update on player status.
Ensure consultant physiotherapists within the PDP are monitoring player status for their teams and updating coaches.
Liaise with club medical staff prior to camps to ensure player availability to report, and in depth understanding of any ongoing issues. Share this information as appropriate with the Performance MDT/coach/team operations.
Attendance and contribution to planning, review, selection and talent management processes for the team you are working with
Attend all other PDP planning and review meetings when attendance from consultant staff is not possible.
Develop and maintain close working relationships with PDP Lead coach to ensure a cohesive multi-disciplinary approach.
Develop and maintain close working relationships with the Pathway Lead Doctor and the PDP Physical Performance Coach to ensure a cohesive multi-disciplinary approach.
Develop and maintain close working relationships with the Lead physiotherapist and the YDP physiotherapist to ensure aligned delivery of physiotherapy services across the Men's Pathway.
Develop close working relationships with peers in professional clubs to enable knowledge of and management of international players, as well as driving Individual player development plans
Ensure a comprehensive review process following camps to ensure we are constantly finding ways to improve our delivery and level of service provision.


Contribute to the development of projects aimed at supporting winning England Teams. There is a clear focus on gaining performance insights on player from the data we collect to support the management of players on camp and the talent ID process. Key projects include;
Senior England Men's Team Tournament projects
Injury management and profiling
Injury and Illness Surveillance study
Wellness Exposure
Mandated screening and player educations
Health Wellbeing
Performance insights data projects.
Mandatory attendance and contribution to FA PPMN CPD/training days throughout the year
Any other task as is reasonably required by The FA in order to fulfil the Appointment effectively, adhering to the current Standard Operating Procedures of the department.

Executes additional tasks as required in order to meet FA Group changing priorities.
Comply with all company policies and procedures to ensure the highest standards of health, safety and wellbeing can be maintained.

What we are looking for

The successful candidate would ideally demonstrate the following skills and experience:

Chartered physiotherapist. Registered with the HCPC
Post graduate qualifications in Sport's Medicine
Extensive evidence of CPD in sports Medicine
Over 5 years' experience in professional sport
Excellent academic and applied knowledge of contemporary practice in Sport and Exercise Medicine
Advanced Emergency Pitchside Care Qualification (ATMMiF or equivalent)
Track record of successfully integrating into established and developing coaching teams
Excellent planning and communication skills with experience participating in multi-disciplinary teams.

In addition, candidates would ideally possess the following:

Experience travelling abroad with teams
Experience in International or Club Football
Experience in Elite sport
Experience leading multi-disciplinary teams

You will also demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills and an ability to work closely with internal and external stakeholders. You will display behaviours to maintain and enhance good relationships which will help develop The FA's positive professional profile across the business and wider industry.

Please be aware that unless you are on ahomebased contract, your contract with The FA will specify a fixed location of either Wembley Stadium, St. George's Park or our Processing Centre.
We currently work within a hybrid working model whereby the expectation is to work from your contractual location for part of the week, and as and when required by the team. The remaining days can be worked remotely. We will continue to monitor this model and it may be adjusted in future if deemed necessary.
