ABOUT THE ROLE

Reporting to the Head of Sports Science, this role serves to maximise the physical performance of the Australian Women’s National Team players (the Matildas) to deliver on-field excellence resulting in a sustainable winning
culture. Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, the Lead Sports Scientist – Matildas provides strength and conditioning support to an extended list of players, travels domestically and internationally to prepare the team for competition and helps integrate pathway players into the Matildas setup.


Please note that this role is fixed term until 31 October 2024.


Duties & Responsibilities:

Aid the performance of Matildas players in camp by leading the provision of strength and conditioning services, recovery sessions, warm-ups and, in cooperation with other Sports Science and Sports Medicine staff, individualised rehabilitation sessions.
Oversee the collection and distribution of wellbeing and physical performance information, including the use of GPS technology, to help guide training prescription and individualisation.
Undertake physical testing of players, forming part of ongoing player care and management, and provide insights on player development to coaches and other high-performance staff.
Liaise with other Sports Science and Sports Medicine staff daily (in camp) to ensure best practice care for all Matildas players and communicate recommendations clearly to coaching staff.
Out of camp, liaise closely with coaching, medical and logistics staff to support the planning of camp schedules and provide input on the training structure, travel arrangements, acclimatisation strategies, meal timings and other factors affecting performance.
Design appropriate, individualised and football specific strength and conditioning programs for an extended list of Matildas players, in cooperation with medical staff and players’ clubs.
Communicate frequently with high-performance staff at players’ clubs to ensure their continuous care when transitioning between clubs and national team.
Ensure the smooth transition and ongoing care of youth team players into the Matildas’ setup by liaising with the Head of Sports Science, youth team sports science staff and other relevant persons.
Stocktake Matildas’ sports science equipment, provide input into the purchasing of sports science equipment for female national teams via the Head of Sports Science, and order nutritional supplements for Matildas camps with the input of Football Australia’s nutrition experts.

ABOUT YOU



Experience, Skills and Qualifications:

5+ years of experience working with professional athletes, ideally females
High level of written and verbal communication skills and an ability to build rapport quickly
Ability to work collaboratively and supportively within a high-performance team environment
Postgraduate qualification in Sports and Exercise Science or related field
Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA) accredited Sports Scientist, Exercise Scientist or High-Performance Manager or comparable international accreditation


Additional Requirements:

Working with children check (paid/ employee) or state- based equivalent if residing in Australia
International Police Check if residing outside of Australia
Out of hours and weekend work as required
Intrastate, interstate and international travel
