SDFC (San Diego FC) is the newest member of the MLS family. As part of the unique Right to Dream (RTD) model and the Sycuan Tribe’s deep roots, we are proud to be building a San Diego-centric soccer organization and residential football academy that honors our history and celebrates emerging excellence.
The Head of School (HOS) is a founding leader who is responsible for defining, building and achieving the school’s vision and mission by providing strategic leadership and daily management of all aspects of the school’s people, programs, and systems. The HOS will lead the development and oversee the delivery of the residential, middle and upper school programs.
Reporting to the Academy Executive Director (EVP), the HOC will manage the teaching, residential life, safeguarding, groundskeeping and office staff. They will work in close connection with the school Board of Directors, Right to Dream leaders, and SDFC football staff to support academy players and their families as they develop their football, character, and academic profiles. The Head of School will work to build strategic and collective solutions for all academy players and coaches. The ideal candidate may be stepping up from a ‘Deputy Head of’ or Department Head leadership role. Must bring a passion for supporting a diverse student body and staff to execute the vision of Right to Dream with a personal commitment to embodying the values of the school and San Diego Football Club. The school will open in the Fall of 2025 with up to 25 students and grow to student population of up to 100 across grades 6-12.
Develop, manage and lead academic functions of the RTD San Diego School
Provide support for residential life oversight on a day-to-day basis
Manage and collaborate with the Head of Pathways, Head of Residential Life and Head of Studies to support incoming academy residents with their development journeys as it relates to football, their academic pathway and their life on campus
Maintain communication and connection with Right to Dream group activities to align education principles across the academies and supporting players from our academies in Denmark, Egypt and Ghana when they are in San Diego
Develop and implement a comprehensive academic program that aligns with California accreditation standards
Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment that promotes character development and athletic achievement
Collaborate with faculty to create a curriculum that integrates soccer training with academic coursework
Hiring and Staff Development:
Recruit, hire, and mentor a high-caliber team of educators and support staff.
Provide professional development opportunities to enhance the skills and knowledge of faculty and staff
Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement
Co-develop and manage the school's budget, ensuring financial sustainability and responsible resource allocation
Work closely with the Academy Executive Director to secure funding and partnerships to support the academy's mission and programs
Design, build and maintain relationships with the local San Diego community with regard to strategic initiatives and community engagement between the school and San Diego
Build strong relationships with students and parents
Organize and participate in community events to promote the academy and its values
Serve as the public face of the academy, representing its mission and goals in the broader community
Compliance and Accreditation:
Oversee the accreditation process, including the preparation of documentation and coordination of site visits
Keep abreast of educational trends, safety and security, and best practices to enhance the academy's academic standing
The ideal candidate is an experienced or up-and-coming, determined school leader who is eager to build a world class environment for athletes and staff to thrive in an unparalleled academic and athletic environment in San Diego. Building a school and a high performing learning community will be at the center of this role and the candidate will embrace this task with both long term vision and enthusiasm and drive to design and deliver in a unique setting.
Right to Dream academies around the world combine residential and academic life, and it is preferable that the candidate has experience in sports and has held leadership roles working in a residential academic setting. With an economically and culturally diverse student and staff population, the candidate must have a flexible mindset and seek to innovate and connect with all types of students and learning backgrounds. The candidate must also be an excellent communicator with enthusiasm to positively influence the lives of young students on a dual pathway through education and professional football. Candidates can meet the qualifications for this role with a combination of education, experience and skills.
Degree in education, Educational Leadership, or a related field
Must be able to pass criminal background check and be fingerprinted
4 years Leadership-level experience in an accredited American middle and high school education system
Strong understanding of curriculum development, pedagogy, and child psychology
Ability to balance academic growth and sporting excellence with healthy social and emotional growth
Excellent leadership, communication and interpersonal skills
Strong organizational and strategic planning abilities
During School session must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays
Ability to meet requirements and valid California teaching and administrative credentials
Master’s degree in education
Experience founding an independent school
International teaching experience
Experience working with athletes or in a sport environment
Experience with alternative learning styles and managing IEPs
Spanish language proficiency strongly preferred
An understanding and appreciation for the role of soccer in the holistic development of students
Interest and ability to live on-site at our beautiful campus housing at Singing Hills (single and family accommodations available), a plus
