Head of Academy Sports Science and Medicine
 
Derby County Football Club are seeking to recruit a motivated and confident individual to join our Category One Academy Medical Team as the Head of Academy Sports Science and Medicine.
 
Our Academy vision is to continue to provide talented, well balanced young professional footballers for Derby County's first-team squad and become recognised as the ‘Academy of Choice’ for young players within our local area and beyond.
 
The successful candidate will responsible for managing and delivering the Sports Science and Medicine Programme for all Academy Players registered with the Club detailing the planned provision to each of its Academy Players in at least the following areas: sports science (including physiology, biometrics, physical testing and measurement); physiotherapy (including hydrotherapy and sports massage); medical services (including the prevention and treatment of injury and diet and nutrition); Performance Analysis; and psychology.
 
Recent and relevant professional experience in a sports performance environment, including managerial experience in a sports science environment is essential as the post holder will be responsible for the development, organisation and implementation of the treatment and rehabilitation programmes for the academy staff.
 
Key responsibilities:
 
To ensure that each of the Academy Players undergoes the following tests to measure physical and physiological fitness: age appropriate medical and physical screening; anthropometric assessments; physiological/fitness testing; movement and posture/functional screening; predictive testing of size and shape/maturation measurement; psychological profiling; and monitoring of physical exertion; and shall submit to the League such information as it may from time to time require in order to establish a national database of athletic development.
To be involved in all medical, health and sports science related matters appertaining to all Academy Players.
To be responsible for the assessment and treatment of the 17 – 21 years of age Academy Players, including the development, organisation and implementation of the treatment, injury prevention strategies and rehabilitation programmes.
To assist in the completion and security of all medical insurance documentation appertaining to the 17 – 21 years of age Academy Players.
To assist in the co-ordination and liaison with the Drug testing To ensure player compliance and adherence to testing protocols.
To be responsible for accompanying the under 18 years of age squad on match days in conjunction with the Academy Physiotherapist.
To ensure that there is appropriate first aid or primary care provision available at all games involving Academy teams
To ensure that an appropriately qualified physiotherapist or a coach shall be present at all coaching and matches taking place in Academies.
To ensure that details of all injuries suffered by Academy Players and of rehabilitation are recorded and provided to the League and the FA in order that a national audit of injury and rehabilitation may be maintained.
To record the progress and development of each Academy Player under the Sports Science and Medicine Programme in the Performance Review and Performance Clock.
To co-ordinate the medical screening for those Academy Players (in close conjunction with the Head Physiotherapist) as designated under the F.A / PFA sponsored scheme as part of the pre-signing
To construct injury profiles on all full-time Academy Players and actively implement injury prevention strategies in the form of “pre-”
To organise and deliver medical / health education programmes of training for all Academy Players and staff.
To be involved in the organisation and conduction of “in service” medical training for academy coaching and / or medical
To prioritise and delegate appropriate case load to the Academy Physiotherapist, providing appropriate supervision.
To co-ordinate and deliver (where appropriate) health / medical education briefings for all Academy Player’s parents / guardians.
To consult with the Head of the Academy, Head Physiotherapist, Doctor, Academy Physiotherapist, Coach/es, and Parents / Guardians of all Academy Players concerning all medical / health related matters.
To be involved in the counselling process of all Academy Players concerning all medical / health related matters.
 
Personal characteristics and experience:
 
Degree in Physiotherapy / Member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (MCSP)
Member of the Health Professions Council (HPC)
Documented evidence of CPD
Previous post graduate experience in professional sport
Previous people management or supervisory experience
Previous experience of operating in a decision-making capacity within a clinical setting
Good understanding of sporting injuries and how common sports injuries are avoided
Strong decision-making skills and committed to exacting standards
Understanding of current clinical guidelines and relevant legislation
Knowledge of the Data Protection Act
Excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively across all levels
Ability to organize, schedule and adapt work tasks to meet conflicting deadlines and respond to changing situations
Flexible approach to work during unsociable hours
