Derby County Football Club are seeking to recruit a motivated and confident individual to join our Category One Academy Medical Team as the Head of Academy Sports Medicine.
Our Academy vision is to continue to provide talented, well balanced young professional footballers for Derby County's first-team squad and become recognised as the ‘Academy of Choice’ for young players within our local area and beyond.
The successful candidate will be responsible for managing and delivering the Sports Medicine Programme for all Academy Players registered with the Club detailing the planned provision to each of its Academy Players in at least the following areas: physiotherapy (including hydrotherapy and sports massage); medical services (including the prevention and treatment of injury and diet and nutrition); and psychology.
Recent and relevant professional experience in a sports performance environment, including managerial experience in an elite sports environment is essential as the post holder will be responsible for the development, organisation and implementation of the treatment and rehabilitation programmes for the academy staff whilst liaising daily with a multi-disciplinary team.
To be responsible for the development, organisation and implementation of the treatment and rehabilitation programmes for the academy staff.
To be responsible for accompanying the under 18 years of age squad on match days in conjunction with the Academy Physiotherapist.
To ensure that there is appropriate first aid or primary care provision available at all games involving Academy teams.
To ensure that details of all injuries suffered by Academy Players and of rehabilitation are recorded and provided to the League and the FA in order that a national audit of injury and rehabilitation may be maintained.
To attend reserve team matches as required.
To record the progress and development of each Academy Player under the Medicine Programme (including the results of tests, full details of injuries, the treatment thereof, and the length and period of rehabilitation) in the Performance Review and Performance Clock.
To co-ordinate the medical screening for those Academy Players (in close conjunction with the Head Physiotherapist) as designated under the F.A / PFA sponsored scheme as part of the pre-signing medical.
To construct injury profiles on all full-time Academy Players and actively implement injury prevention strategies in the form of “pre-habilitation.”
To monitor longitudinal trends such as weight, body fat and composition and implement strategies to reach desirable levels for both academy and first team players.
To prioritise and delegate appropriate case load to the Academy Physiotherapist, providing appropriate supervision.
To co-ordinate and deliver (where appropriate) health / medical education briefings for all Academy Player’s parents / guardians.
To be involved in the counselling process of all Academy Players concerning all medical / health related matters.
To be involved in the recruitment of all Academy medical staff in conjunction with the First Team Manager, Head of the Academy, and Head physiotherapist as applicable.
To attend briefings as able (or delegate to assistants), courses and seminars as required by The Academy, The Club and The Football Association Medical Education Centre as designated in “The Charter for Quality” (medical requirements).
To ensure that all medical / health related matters appertaining to “The Charter for Quality” (medical requirements) are adhered to.
To assist the Head Physiotherapist and Academy Director as directed/required.
Travel as and when required, supporting effective medical treatment.
To demonstrate consistent high standards of behavior and to operate within the parameters of the Laws of the Game, the Rules of the Football Association, or the Rules of the FA Premier League.
Personal characteristics and experience:
Degree in Physiotherapy / Member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (MCSP)
Member of the Health Professions Council (HPC)
Recent and relevant professional experience in a sports performance environment, including managerial experience in an elite sports environment
Documented evidence of CPD
Previous post graduate experience in professional sport
Previous people management or supervisory experience
Previous experience of operating in a decision-making capacity within a clinical setting
Good understanding of sporting injuries and how common sports injuries are avoided
Understanding of current clinical guidelines and relevant legislation
Knowledge of the Data Protection Act
Ability to respond calmly and appropriately when injuries are sustained during games or training sessions
