Role description


An exciting opportunity has arisen to undertake a fully funded applied PhD Studentship in conjunction with the University of Birmingham and West Bromwich Albion FC. The purpose of this role is to combine postgraduate research with the development of practitioner based applied sport science skills developed through assisting in the delivery of the sport science and medical programme at the Academy at West Bromwich Albion FC. The position will be for a 3-year period subject to the satisfactory progress of the individual in the role.

As part of the Academy Sports Science & Medicine team and as a doctoral student, the key responsibilities of this role are:

To plan and complete a programme of research suitable for a PhD related to football performance.
Engage with a programme of applied sport science related training associated with the development of relevant competencies for applied practice within elite football.
Assist in the support of the delivery of the Academy performance plan in areas such as: Nutrition, data collection, management and analysis, development and delivery of on-pitch and gym-based training sessions, regular performance testing and associated interpretation and reporting of results, and attendance at selected games and training camps.
To fulfil the academic, professional, and personal requirements associated with the completion of tasks linked to the completion of doctoral level postgraduate research and the role of a practitioner in elite football .
The carry out all responsibilities with due regard to the Club values and all policies and procedures, in particular Health & Safety, Equality and Diversity and Safeguarding
To undertake all required training, including mandatory Club Equality and Diversity, Safeguarding and Health and Safety training.
Keep up to date with new methods and undertake any necessary internal or external training sessions in accordance with Company Policies and Procedures

Experience of working in the elite sporting environment
BSc in Sport Science or related field
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Team player
Positive attitude
Desire to improve young athletes
Two satisfactory references from previous employers & DBS check
Energy and enthusiasm

Postgraduate qualification in Sport Science or related field
Experience of working in academy football
Demonstrate activity related to accreditation with a professional body relevant to sport and exercise science
An interest in delivery of nutrition education, advice and interventions with parents, players and staff
Knowledge of LTAD frameworks
Experience using PMA
Experience using GPS
Knowledge of the EPPP requirements
Extensive sport science delivery experience
