The Arsenal Football Club Medical Department is a multi-disciplinary function, focused on providing world leading medical care and injury prevention/management to its professional elite players. The department is comprised of Doctors, physiotherapists, researchers and other complementary disciplines so as to achieve a holistic approach to player care.
Reporting into the Lead Sports Scientist, the Performance Nutritionist will be responsible for the nutritional support and education of all relevant First Team players. The postholder will aim to achieve the objectives laid out in a programme agreed with the Head of Sports Medicine.
The job purpose is to maximise the First Team players' performance and recovery primarily through nutrition (and other means) while interacting within our multi-disciplinary department to ensure an optimal approach to player development.
Prescribe, Monitor and Maintain optimal body weight/composition of First Team Players.
Lead on the First Team's nutrition with both squad based and individual strategies. Monitoring players nutrition and the impact on a player's performance (body composition, nutritional knowledge, anti-doping awareness, hydration)
Periodise nutritional supplementation around the first teams training schedule and period of the season
Lead on the ongoing development of a 'food first' nutritional approach to ensure a clear and consistent framework across the First Team squad.
Ordering all Nutritional supplements, supplies and kit and ensure all supplements including batch testing certificates are stored and all supplements administered to players are logged against players records in Club's medical and performance database. Prepare nutritional supplements as required pre and post training and matches.
Lead on designing and providing feedback on the nutritional database within the in-house athlete management system to provide short and long-term tracking of players which can be used to inform coaches and practitioners of players current status (weight / DXA / nutritional supplementation / individual targets)
Respond to the requirements of the First Team Physiotherapists and ensure players undergoing rehab are individually supported through to full fitness.
Liaise with First Team Chefs and facilities team on day-to-day menus at London Colney and pre and post-match menus to ensure that food is of the highest quality and players attain their nutritional goals at every possible opportunity.
Liaise with First Team Doctors on anti-doping updates and during anti-doping tests to ensure all nutritional supplements are listed during a FA/UEFA anti-doping visit.
Deliver all elements of the nutritional pre-season screening programme including DXA and hydration and assist other parts of the Medical and Performance team as required.
Liaise with all international federations to ensure that player's nutritional supplements given whilst on international duty are logged and recorded.
Ensure DXA protocols are reviewed and followed by all Club nutritionists using IRMER legislation and continuous review of research into the use of DXA in athletes. Ensure regular RPA visits and servicing of DXA equipment to ensure best practice is being followed.
Liaise with First Team Coaching staff weekly on player nutrition, planned nutritional events and suggested amends/additions to First Team menus.
Liaising with Partnerships on the nutrition partnership and delivering contractually agreed objectives.
Manage relationships across all staff to ensure consistent alignment and the sharing of good practice
Ensure all medical and performance staff have 'Accredited Advisor' status with UK Anti-doping.
Ensure yearly FA Level 2 Emergency First Aid qualification is undertaken.
Actively contribute to the Club's Research and Development meetings and actively participate in CPD.
MAIN JOB REQUIREMENTS AND PERSON SPECIFICATION
Excellent communication skills that can influence and motivate behavioural change.
The ability to communicate complex information in simple terms, dependent on the audience.
A degree (or equivalent) in Sports Nutrition / Sport and Exercise Science / Biomedicine and Nutrition / Physiology in an appropriate subject.
A passion for and understanding of sport.
A sound understanding of physiological principles of sport exercise.
Experience of working with athletes/coaches, providing nutritional support.
An innovative mindset within an evolving industry.
Experience of working as part of a multidisciplinary team
To be on the SENR (Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register) register or to be able to be on the register in one year.
A post-graduate qualification in Sport Exercise Nutrition (e.g., MSc, IOC Diploma).
Experience of planning, implementing, and monitoring interventions with elite athletes.
Outstanding player management and communication skills.
Operates with the utmost integrity, professional distance, and has high standards of ethics.
Proven ability to integrate into a team environment.
