Under the direction of the Academy, the Discovery Program Manager/Assistant Coach will be responsible for identifying and developing players via the Portland Timbers Development Model. Local player and club connections are important in maximizing opportunities for identifying local players. The Discovery Program is the first impression for potential Portland Timbers Academy players. Execution of this program must be done at the most professional level possible.  
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES  GENERIC DUTIES·     Collaborates with the Academy Technical Staff on all aspects of player development, club Identity and talent management ·     DP player pool management and evaluations·     DP training session planning, management, and assessments·     Assist in consulting and advising with respect to the program rosters·     Assist in player identification and recruitment in local market·     Observe, assessment, scout all ODP/RTC tryouts and training·     Responsible for executing and helping communicate player development best practices to local soccer community at both competitive but also grassroots level ·     Assist the Head Coach of Academy team as determined·     Work closely, constructively, and collaboratively with the Academy coaching staff, trainer and support staff·     Assist and ensure there are optimal conditions for team performance·     Enforce team rules and league rules applicable to the team’s players and or coaching staff·     Off-field responsibilities include, but not limited to:§  Curriculum development§  Video analysis§  General administrative duties§  Identification and Recruitment§  Maintenance of a talent identification and recruitment database§  Assist in management of player records and files§  Attendance at all scheduled meetings SPECIFIC DUTIES·     Be responsible to lead training for Discovery Program in accordance with the Portland Timbers development model·     Keep records of all training sessions·     Assess performance and skill development for each DP player and schedule appropriate evaluations·     Follow evaluation process to provide qualitative but also quantitative data on players consistent to the Academy and local landscape direction·     Maintain a winning culture and high-performance environment·     Be proactive in seeking educational opportunities to grow as a coach and to help with the development of the club·     Coach and or assist with Academy teams in exhibitions, regular season, playoff, tournament, international and other games when requested and does not interfere with primary duties ·     Assist on designing training sessions that positively affect the needs of the teams and programs·     Assist with the scouting of next opponent with match reports.·     Prepare players for games played by the team, including developing game strategies and the scouting of opposing teams.·     This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive, and employee will also perform other reasonably related business duties as assigned by their immediate supervisor and other management as required CUSTOMER FOCUS·     The Discovery Program Manager/Assistant Coach will maintain and develop relationships with strategic youth soccer partners in the community.  This will include, but not be restricted to: OYSA, PYSA, THPRD, Adidas and our Timbers Alliance Clubs·     Assist when needed with development opportunities of players outside the Academy system·     Interact with members of the public and soccer community in a positive and respectful way as to protect and enhance the brand·     Attend as necessary, events when needed to promote Timbers programs or act as a Club ambassador REQUIRED SKILLS·     Broad soccer related background·     Demonstrated organizational, communicative, and practical knowledge and delivery of soccer specific content·     Demonstrated administrative and organizational abilities to manage multiple programs and priorities, including event planning, player welfare concerns, and academy administrative needs as assigned.·     Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing·     Bilingual (English/Spanish) helpful but not required·     Clean Driving Record·     Subject to a Background Check·     USSF “B” Coaching License or better required·     Minimum 5 years of coaching experience·     Professional playing background preferred·     Be innovative and creative – help create the future by being self-motivated with the ability to think independently and with flexibility.·     Utilize the Academy’s methodology and culture to consistently reinforce our way so that players understand and respect that a strong professional relationship exists in the coaching group·     Keep up with the latest technology in computing, communications, sports science and sports analysis.·     Don’t offer “passive” support – be active in your support of decisions and philosophies.·     Maintain unquestionable trustworthiness – trust is the cornerstone of any great relationship.·     Develop strengths where the program has weaknesses.·     It is vital to have an Academy Coaching staff that is in tune with the club's ideological approach and has the skill set to carry out their respective duties.·     Have an outstanding knowledge of the sport, opponents and be prepared to share that knowledge.·     Strive to learn more about coaching, your sport and your role – recognizing that no matter how much you might know there will always be more to learn·     Assist in making sure all staff works towards the successful implementation of their performance plan and set the standard for the club in terms of knowledge and work ethic. DISPOSITION/ATTITUDE·        The Discovery Program Manager/Assistant Coach must have a positive and respectful demeanor to interact and work with other departments within the Club·        The Discovery Program Manager/Assistant Coach will provide key assistance in running the academy program and must be able to maintain both safety and decorum as a priority.·        When called upon, the employee will be asked to attend functions or events and as such must always be positive and respectful in all interactions at such events 
SPECIAL CONDITIONS This position is considered exempt from minimum wage and overtime pay requirements.

The Portland Timbers enter their eleventh season in Major League Soccer (MLS) in 2022.
