The role
The University of Surrey Men’s Performance Rugby Team has a vision of being in the BUCS Super Rugby within 3-5yrs. The programme has significantly grown & developed over the last 18 months. You will be supporting the Lead Athletic Performance Coach in their work with the Men’s University Performance Rugby players over the course of the upcoming season (2024-2025). We are looking to offer highly motivated and enthusiastic students the chance to gain experience and to develop their sport science and training knowledge in the field of strength and conditioning within a high-performance rugby environment. The primary goal of the placement is to thoroughly prepare the student for future independent work as an applied athletic performance coach.
The Responsibilities
Working alongside the Lead Athletic Development Coach in gym, field, and rehab-based sessions to provide high-quality support to athletes
Assist the Lead Athletic Development Coach in planning, implementing, and executing strength and conditioning programs
Provide support to athletes during rehabilitation sessions, including assisting with exercises and monitoring progress
Lead training & match day warm-ups
Help identify and implement injury prevention strategies
Attend team meetings and assist with athlete evaluations as required
Support the Academy Athletic Development Coach in maintaining a safe and effective training environment.
About You
We are looking for early strength and conditioning coaches with a positive attitude and inquisitive mindset that are eager to learn, contribute, and develop their practical skillset and critical thinking. The only formal requirement to apply is that you are formally enrolled in a strength and conditioning (or closely related) undergraduate course.

Location: Surrey Sports Park, Guildford, GU2 7AD
Reporting to: Lead Athletic Performance Coach
Start Date: September 2024
End Date: May 2025
Hours: 15-20 hours per/week across a season. This can be adjusted as required to meet the placement criteria. Evening hours are required.
Remuneration: This is a voluntary unpaid placement
