Role description


Manchester City Football Club’s Performance Services aim to create engaging performance environments that maximise team and individual potential. This post will contribute to MCWFC success by delivering evidence informed physical performance support to MCWFC 1st team to develop players who are able to perform with high skill at high intensity across a season and in multiple competitions.

The 1st Team Physical Performance Coach will play an important part in supporting first team performance outcomes and will be a key member of the MCWFC Physical Performance team and wider MCWFC MDT. The postholder will be required to work collaboratively with players, coaches, and the wider multidisciplinary team to develop and implement integrated strength and conditioning programmes that achieve positive physical change and have objective impact on performance.

Role specific accountabilities:

Responsible for the planning, delivery, and review of evidence informed strength & conditioning programmes (on/off-pitch) that maximise individual physical development and group physical performance and are aligned to the MCFC Performance Services strategy.

Plan, deliver, and review evidence informed strength and conditioning programmes that support optimal injury rehabilitation/return to performance, working in collaboration with the wider multidisciplinary team.

Plan, deliver, and feedback on evidence informed Physical Profiling systems that inform individual development plans, individual S&C programmes, rehab/return to play programmes, and ‘What it Takes to Win’ (WITTW).

Contribute to the development and Implementation of evidence informed monitoring systems (external load, internal load, wellness, neuromuscular state) that provide actionable insights to inform multidisciplinary team decision making and ‘What it Takes to Win’ (WITTW).

Work collaboratively with the wider MDT to plan, deliver, and review recovery and regeneration interventions that support optimal recovery and adaptation to training.

Provide matchday physical performance support as required to ensure players are prepared and able to perform at their best.

Work with the Head of Performance Services and Head of Physical Performance to lead on the development and delivery of tasks and projects that contribute to the ongoing development of MCWFC Physical Performance as required and requested.

Contribute to in-house continued professional development to ensure that the Physical Performance & Medical teams are continually evolving with the support of leading research and professional practice.

Role specific knowledge, skills and experience:

BSc in Sport Science, Strength & Conditioning or related area.
A recognised postgraduate qualification (ie MSc) in Sport Science, Strength & Conditioning or related area
UKSCA Accreditation or equivalent
First Aid qualification

Essential Skills & Experience
Significant experience working in an elite sporting environment.
Significant experience of working effectively within a high-performing interdisciplinary team.
Significant experience developing and delivering physical development programmes to achieve objective performance impact
An ability to develop excellent relationships with players, coaches & the wider MDT.
An ability to reflect on current working practice & adapt as required.
An ability to utilise performance related data to inform practice

Experience working in elite professional football.
Previous experience working with elite female athletes/in Women’s sport.
BASES accreditation
Experienced delivering/contributing successful physical change in complex injury rehabilitation/return to play programmes
